TO The Legislative Assembly of Ontario: -

WHEREAS the Government of Ontario is imposing a natural gas powered peaker plant, within the heritage hamlet and wetland complex of Ansnorveldt, among some of Ontario’s most productive farmland, and the protected countryside of the Greenbelt including the Holland Marsh, against the will of King Township and attempting to exempt the decision from the Planning Act; and

WHEREAS the proposed site for the plant is in an agriculturally and environmentally sensitive area that is an important source of healthy local food for all Ontarians; and

WHEREAS the decision-making process regarding this plant raises serious concerns regarding provincial municipal relations related to planning issues and undermines the province’s Greenbelt legislation;

WHEREAS the York Energy Centre developer cannot meet the deadline of an operational date of 2011 and is unable to satisfy regulatory requirements linked to the Provincial Policy Statement and flood plain issues;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the undersigned petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to end plans for a gas powered peaker plant, known as the York Energy Centre, located in King Township in the Holland Marsh.

Thank you for standing up for strong communities and saying no to the gas-fired power plant in Holland Marsh!
