The Ford government wants to chop down more of Ontario’s forests. They are:

Giving companies new loopholes to bypass the Endangered Species Act
Doubling the amount of industrial logging from 15 to 30 million cubic metres
Threatening old-growth pine forests in Temagami

Ontario loses 40,000 football fields worth of forest every year, but Ford’s plan will make things even worse for climate and caribou herds.

Dear Minister,

The world faces a climate crisis and a biodiversity crisis that demand our attention.

We have a moral responsibility to protect old-growth forests that store carbon and a legal responsibility to restore the forest habitat of threatened caribou herds.

Yet your government has undertaken a set of sweeping measures to erase key protections for Ontario’s forests, including:

- New exemptions allowing forestry operation to bypass the Endangered Species Act;
- A proposal to double the rate of logging to 30 million cubic metres; and
- Approving a forest management plan for Temagami that ignores the climate value of old-growth forests.

Minister, you are putting Ontario’s reputation for sustainable forestry and conservation at risk.

We should be protecting old-growth forests that store carbon and provide habitat for caribou.

We should be focusing on sustainably harvested, value-added wood products rather than rip-and-ship logging.

I urge you to reverse your changes and conserve Ontario’s forests.
