Hands off Ontario Wildlife

Despite outrage from the public and conservation community, the Ford government plans to decimate the Endangered Species Act. Bill 108 would gut the laws that protect Ontario’s 243 species-at-risk by:

Giving the Minister new powers to ignore science and suspend habitat protection;
Creating a pay-to-slay fund, allowing companies to pay a fee to harm wildlife; and
Removing protection for at-risk species in Ontario if they live outside the province.

The public was already consulted on this. And 98% of people wanted wildlife protections to be kept or strengthened.

So why is the Ford government siding with the 2% who want to destroy endangered species habitat?

Send a letter to the Environment Minister, asking him to protect endangered species rather than push them to the brink.

Dear Hon. Minister Phillips, Hon. Minister Clark:

Please accept these comments as part of the public consultation on the changes to the Endangered Species Act contained within Bill 108.

I stand firmly opposed to any changes that weaken Ontario's protections for the 230+ species-at-risk. That is why I urge you to completely remove Schedule 5 from Bill 108.

As you know, biodiversity around the world, including Ontario, is under extreme pressure from habitat loss and climate change. The first comprehensive scientific report released last week predicts the looming extinction of 1 million species if we fail to act.

But instead of increasing Ontario's protections for species-at-risk, Schedule 5 decimates the Endangered Species Act, making it even easier for wildlife and their habitat to be destroyed.

You are writing off Ontario's threatened wildlife as nothing more than red tape. These actions don't just push wildlife to the brink. They also threaten our food security, our resilience to climate change, and our economy.

Ministers, I urge you to do the right thing.

Remove Schedule 5 from Bill 108 and start helping rather than harming Ontario's species-at-risk.
