Stand up for Ontario’s endangered species

There are currently around 220 at-risk plants and animals in Ontario and that number keeps growing.

And the Ford government’s track record on protecting biodiversity is abysmal.

They’ve pulled the plug on protecting species at risk, gutted conservation authorities and cut funding to programs that limit the spread of invasive species.

And they’re determined to plow ahead with Highway 413, a project that will destroy streams and wetlands and disrupt the habitat of at least 29 at-risk species.

Doug Ford thinks environmental protections are red tape but we know that healthy natural ecosystems benefit all Ontarians – strengthening our food security, protecting our drinking water, building resilience to extreme weather events, and improving our mental wellbeing.

We’re calling on the Premier and his environment minister Andrea Khanjin to protect our province’s precious biodiversity. Will you join us?

Dear Premier Ford and Minister Khanjin,

The list of endangered and threatened species in Ontario keeps growing and your government’s actions are just making things worse.

You removed important provisions from the Endangered Species Act, allowing deep-pocketed corporations to pay for environmental harms by paying into the Species at Risk Conservation Fund. You have also gutted conservation authorities and cut funding to programs that limit the spread of invasive species.

And you remain determined to plow ahead with Highway 413, a project that will destroy streams and wetlands and disrupt the habitat of at least 29 at-risk species.

Preserving biodiversity is not red tape. Healthy natural ecosystems benefit all Ontarians – strengthening our food security, protecting our drinking water, building resilience to extreme weather events, and improving our mental wellbeing.

I’m calling on you to change course and act now to protect our province’s precious biodiversity by:

- restoring the original Endangered Species Act,
- properly funding endangered species recovery efforts and habitat stewardship programs, 
- cancelling the Species at Risk Conservation Fund (aka “Pay to Slay”) that lets businesses offset their harm to biodiversity by paying into the fund, and
- cancelling Highway 413.
