We need an extreme heat plan

Extreme heat events bring with them a whole host of negative impacts. Children don’t learn as well and people with underlying health conditions are at particular risk.

Since 2009 there have been over 1,000 reported heat related deaths in Canada and the climate crisis is going to make things worse.

Models developed by the Intact Centre on Climate Change show that the frequency, length and intensity of heat waves will increase significantly in various Ontario regions.

And yet the provincial government still doesn’t have a plan to address extreme heat events even as they become more and more frequent.

Ontario Greens have developed a heat preparedness plan to protect Ontarians from the negative health effects associated with these extreme heat events.

Our plan includes ensuring access to cooling in all rental households and congregate settings, increasing access to cooling centres, strengthening protections for workers and bolstering clean back-up power generation and storage.

We’re calling on Premier Ford to implement a real plan to prepare Ontario for the extreme heat waves we’re experiencing, before it’s too late.
