If the Ford government really wanted to build more homes people can afford, they would get rid of outdated planning laws that keep us from building apartments, multiplexes and other types of missing middle housing.

Instead they’re sticking to the status quo, even if it costs them billions.

Doug Ford has confirmed that his government won’t legalize fourplexes. Not even if it allows them to access the federal government’s $6 billion Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund.

Instead they’re sticking to their NIMBY ways, ensuring that all new houses will be built further and further from the places people already live where infrastructure already exists.

Ontario Greens are fighting to build housing in communities where we already live, not on our prime farmland, wetlands and forests.

Dear Premier Ford and Minister Calandra,

Under your government, the housing crisis has only gotten worse. And your pro-sprawl, speculator-friendly policies aren’t going to make things any better.

People want homes they can actually afford in communities they know and love.

They aren’t worried about a “four-storey tower”, they’re worried about affording a home.

That’s why I’m urging you to support bold housing solutions that deliver the supply we need – solutions like Mike Schreiner’s Homes You Can Afford In Communities You Love Act that would end exclusionary zoning and build more homes where people already spend their time.

It’s a common-sense solution to build more homes and bring down soaring housing costs without sprawling onto our farmland, wetlands and green space – breathing more life to our communities along the way.

It would also keep Ontario from losing access to the $6 billion Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund. That money could help bring housing back within reach for millions of Ontarians.

You wasted years pretending that sprawling onto the Greenbelt was a housing solution.

Now, it’s time to get serious about housing solutions.

It’s time to get building…or at the very least it’s time to get out of the way.
