Did you know that in most communities across Ontario, we’re not allowed to build the kinds of homes that are key to helping us solve the housing crisis?

Beautiful Brooklyn brownstones, European walkups, those picturesque fourplexes that line the streets of Montreal – under Ontario’s planning laws, none of these are allowed unless builders jump through major (and costly) hoops.

It’s time to say yes to more choices. Yes to more ownership opportunities. Yes to more vibrant communities to live, work and play.

It’s time to legalize housing.

Dear Premier Ford and Minister Calandra,

I’m incredibly disappointed to learn that now the Premier has planted his flag firmly in NIMBY territory by declaring that this government won’t legalize building multiplexes in Ontario.

Two years ago, your own housing affordability task force came up with a long list of recommendations to help the province meet its goal of building 1.5 million homes over the next 10 years.

But instead of implementing those recommendations, your government spent the past two years rolling out the red carpet for well-connected speculators to cash in billions. While housing costs kept rising, your government was auctioning off parcels of the Greenbelt, forcing urban boundary expansions onto communities that didn’t want them, and then wasting even more time (and money) backtracking on all of it.

Needless to say, your approach hasn’t gotten us any closer to solving the housing crisis.

Instead of committing Ontario to more decades of sky-high housing prices it’s time to try something new.

It’s time to say yes to more choices. Yes to more ownership opportunities. Yes to more vibrant communities to live, work and play.

That’s why I’m urging you to support bold housing solutions that deliver the supply we need – solutions like Mike Schreiner’s Homes You Can Afford In Communities You Love Act that would update outdated planning laws that keep us from building apartments, multiplexes and other types of missing middle housing.

It’s a common-sense solution to build more homes and bring down soaring housing costs without sprawling onto our farmland, wetlands and green space – breathing more life to our communities along the way.

It’s time to get serious about housing solutions.

It’s time to legalize housing.
