The Paris Galt Moraine Conservation Act would protect the drinking water of 200,000 people in southern Ontario, putting public interest ahead of private profit.

Our water is under tremendous threat from climate change, urban sprawl and industry.

But Mike Schreiner’s Bill 71 would draw the line - stopping companies from depleting and polluting our most precious resource.

It would also expand the Greenbelt to include more food-growing farmland and important wildlife habitat.

Bill 71 has passed the first few hurdles in the Ontario legislature, but now we need a final vote to turn it into law.

I am writing to encourage your support of MPP Mike Schreiner’s Private Member’s Bill, the Paris Galt Moraine Conservation Act, which passed second reading in the Ontario legislature last year.

The Paris Galt Moraine is an essential water recharge area in the Upper Grand River Watershed that provides clean drinking water for nearly 200,000 people in the Guelph region, which is projected to grow to one million residents by 2041.

The bill would ensure that land use planning decisions protect the moraine’s ecological features and its ability to provide clean water to residents in a region that is solely dependent on groundwater and that is facing increasing drought and water restrictions.

The Paris Galt Moraine provides water at no cost to citizens, but if we do not protect it from mounting pressures, these ecological services could be lost, thus requiring the government to spend millions on water infrastructure.

MPP Schreiner has tabled a sensible and forward-looking bill to protect the community’s long-term drinking water supply. Please do everything you can to turn it into law.
